Why Somerset Bridal is Sponsoring Five Women Survivors of War

We've been sitting on this news for a little while but every time we try to write it down, it comes out a bit emotional. So bear with us.
You know us well enough to know that inclusivity isn't a word we throw around lightly. It's been the foundation of everything we do here, our sample sizes, private appointments and the absolute belief that every single woman who walks through our door deserves to feel extraordinary. Not just brides who fit a certain size or a certain budget. Every bride. Full stop.
But for a while now, something has been niggling at us. A quiet question in the background: what about the women who will never get to be brides at all? The women who are just trying to survive?
So we did something about it.
Somerset Bridal is now a Sister Supporter with Women for Women International. That means we personally sponsor five women survivors of war through their year-long programme, women who have lived through things most of us cannot imagine, and who are now rebuilding their lives with extraordinary courage. We don't just send a donation and move on. We know their names. We follow their progress. And when they graduate, we celebrate.
We'd like you to meet them.
Amina is in Nigeria. She's in month eight of her programme and learning tailoring and bookkeeping. She's a mother of three who lost her husband to conflict and is building something, a business, an income, a future from the ground up. When we received her details and saw her name for the first time, we had to take a moment.
Zawadi is in the DR Congo, just starting out in month three. She's beginning agricultural training after fleeing her village. Month three feels tender, she's right at the beginning of everything.
Parisa is in Afghanistan and she's nearly there — month eleven of twelve. She's already started a small sewing business from her home. We cannot wait to share her graduation.
Nour is in Iraq, halfway through, learning literacy and her legal rights alongside a group of 25 women in Erbil. The Women for Women programme brings women together in groups of 25 — sisters learning side by side, breaking the isolation that conflict causes. That detail gets us every time.
And Immaculée — she graduated. She's in Rwanda, she now runs her own market stall, and she has enrolled her children in school for the first time. She is the reason we do this.
The way the programme works is this: Somerset Bridal commits £110 a month (£22 per sister) to Women for Women International. That money provides each woman with a monthly stipend for essentials, vocational skills training, literacy and numeracy, information about her rights (because many women don't know they have the right to vote, to own land, to inherit property) and crucially a community. A group of women learning and growing together.
Over twelve months, everything changes.
Now, here's the part we want you to understand. We're not telling you this so you feel obligated, or so we can put a badge on our website and call ourselves worthy. We're telling you because we genuinely believe that every bride who chooses Somerset Bridal is part of this.
Not in a transactional way. We're not saying your dress paid for Amina's tailoring lesson. We're saying something simpler and, we think, more beautiful: the business you support when you walk through our door is a business that believes women should support women. Here in Minehead, and on the other side of the world.
When you say yes to your dress, you're saying yes inside a place that stands for something. We wanted you to know what that something is.
We'll be sharing updates on each of our sisters as they move through their programme. When Parisa graduates next month, you'll hear about it. When we welcome a new sister to replace Immaculée, we'll introduce her properly. Their stories will shortly be live on our website at somersetbridal.co.uk/our-sisters and we'll update that page as they progress.
If this has moved you and you want to do something of your own, you can sponsor your own sister directly through Women for Women International from £22 a month. You'll be matched with a woman personally — you'll know her name, her country, and you can even send her messages. It is, without question, one of the nicest things you can do with £22.
For now, thank you. For being part of a community that gives a damn. It means more than you know.
With love,
Debbie and the whole Somerset Bridal family 🌿
